Karl Fritsch was born in 1963 in Sonthofen, Germany. He began studying at Goldsmiths School in Pforzheim from 1982, then studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich under Prof. Hermann Jünger and Prof. Otto Künzli between 1987-94. He moved to Wellington, New Zealand in 2010. The prolific artist is renowned for his daring works that disregard all conventions of traditional jewellery. His treatment of materials and forms disrupt the jewellery world. The artist combines elements of wildly different eras and context, such as multi-carat diamonds, synthetic stones, antique Byzantine rings, aluminium. Fritsch’s signature juxtaposition between glamorous precious stones, and child-like composition as well as coarse finishings result in unique wearable art.
